Sylvania Zoo-Med Reptile Infrared Night Light

Various kinds of infrared lamps have been developed for animal husbandry, on account of their convenient production of both heat to keep animals warm, and a small quantity of light to facilitate observation. This particular model was developed by Sylvania of France in the late 1990s, as a superior high-value product for the pet reptile industry.

Reptiles are cold-blooded animals that require an external heat source to survive. In their native territories sufficient heat is provided by solar radiation during the day, and the heat capacity of the ground maintains some warmth during the night. In capitvity in colder climates, incandescent lamps provide am ideal source of radiant heat which the animals can self-regulate by adjusting their distance to the lamp. However rather lower powers are required than conventional infrared lamps, and the spectrum should be different.

In conjunction with Zoo-Med Labs of USA, Sylvania France developed this lamp. The filament is driven at about 2600K to provide the optimum IR spectrum, and the glass bulb is fabricated from a deep ruby glass made by Vermont Glassworks of Montieramey. The colour is achieved due to selective light scattering by selenium and cadmium sulphide nanoparticles doped into the glass melt. This is helpful not only in reducing luminous flux to avoid glare, but the eyes of many animals have greatly reduced or even no sensitivity in the deep red wavelengths that are transmitted. This allows the animals to sleep during the night, while the lamp keeps them warm and provides a small amount of light that is visible to humans and permits observation of the animals. They are made in ratings from 15W to 100W and also in reflector versions, optimised for various kinds of reptiles.
